About the Client/Child We have had the pleasure of working with Amir and his family since he was a very wee boy! He is now 18 and studying for his A-Levels. Amir enjoys football (supporting no less than 3 teams, Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona!), politics and history (which he is very good at). Amir has cerebral palsy. He has a cochlear implant, is a full-time wheelchair user and requires adult support for all his personal care and healthcare needs. His home is adapted to meet his needs including hoists. He can speak and eats food orally, and although he eats slowly, he loves his food – especially if is something sweet!

The Role at a Glance The main part of this role is to support Amir throughout the night. He experiences spasms, can become very stiff and needs to change sleeping positions during the night. This is quite a physical task and so the role is 2:1, you will have a colleague to assist you. We are recruiting for a team of 4. Initially, one Waking Night Carer will stay in a designated sitting room with a monitor, and one in Amir’s room (He removes his cochlear implant at night and so cannot hear or be disturbed by noise. Amir will call out when he needs assistance. At 18, Amir naturally wants to spend some time socialising with friends and would prefer, as would his friends, not to have one of his parents accompany him! So, some evenings may start at around 7.30pm if Amir wants to go out with his friends, perhaps to the pub, the cinema or theatre. The team we put in place will not only ensure Amir is safely supported at night but also help build his independence and social confidence (and allow his parents to have a good night’s sleep).

This Job Would Suit This role is particularly suited to someone who can provide age-appropriate peer support and confidently accompany an 18-year-old in social, educational and community settings, supporting his independence, dignity and social inclusion. You’ll have waking night and physical disability experience. You’ll ideally share similar interests such as football, politics and history – and enjoy a good chat.

Why You’ll Love This Role Spending time with Amir is number 1! He is a bright and engaging young man. The role offers an attractive work pattern. Training is provided to support physical needs, including the physio stretches he needs.
