About this client: Archie is an older gentleman who lives with his partner, Anna, in their beautiful home in Surrey. He’s a fascinating individual with a rich and accomplished career in the music industry, and he loves sharing stories from that vibrant chapter of his life. He enjoys watching television, including sports, Formula 1 racing, golf, American football, nature programmes, music documentaries and concerts, gardening shows, and the occasional film. At home, Archie has created a stunning garden, where he enjoys taking peaceful strolls, and watching nature. In March, Archie experienced a haemorrhagic stroke. Since then, he has faced some memory challenges and noticeable changes in behaviour and has begun to show signs consistent with vascular dementia. Archie experiences delusions, such as believing he is not at home when he is, and he can feel anxious about time and place. For his safety, Archie is currently not allowed to drive, although he still enjoys going out for drives several times a day.
Overview of role: Archie and Anna are looking for a professional Support Worker to assist Archie for four days a week. The role requires a confident driver, as Archie enjoys daily outings by car to places such as garden centers, and shopping, and occasionally attending medical appointments. Archie is an independent man who values respectful, tactful, and empathetic interaction. Patience and strong listening skills are essential; he has many captivating stories from his time in the music business. While physical assistance isn’t necessary, Archie would appreciate help with small tasks like making tea, snacks, lunches and dinners, and locating items such as keys, remote controls, chargers, and other electronics. Archie enjoys packing suitcases with belongings from around his home and will need help transporting them to the car before a trip and returned to the house afterward. It’s important to respect Archie’s preferences by not opening or unpacking his suitcases, as this may cause distress. This position is primarily about gentle, thoughtful support, and requires someone who can balance being attentive with giving Archie space. The ideal candidate will know when to step in and when to hold back, while remaining calm and professional if Archie expresses frustration.
Who this job would suit: This role is best suited to someone with a calm, composed nature who remains steady under pressure. Ideally, the candidate will be local to the area and able to take a flexible, adaptive approach to their responsibilities. Prior experience with dementia is helpful but not essential, what matters most is a willingness to learn on the job, combined with a genuinely helpful and empathetic attitude.
What’s great about this job: Working with Archie and hearing his remarkable stories will be truly inspiring. Set in a stunning home and surrounded by a picturesque local area, this role offers an exceptional working environment. The successful candidate will step into a fantastic opportunity filled with charm and connection.
