SEN Support Worker in Reading RG4. A great part-time opportunity for a professional to support a bright and engaging young lady of 12 who has a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and ADHD. £20.00 gross per hour.

  • Salary/Wage: £24,960.00 Gross Per Annum | £20.00 Gross Per Hour
  • Driving Requirements: Your own car is needed to travel to the client’s home and to use when on duty. (Mileage paid)
  • Essential: Experience working with children or young adults with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and ADHD. Confident to assist with KS3 Maths & English, and experience working on social and emotional development. Non-smoker / vaper. *This role is open to female applicants only.
  • Desirable: Some experience in personal care, although this will be limited to coaching and guiding. An interest in gaming and spending time with animals.
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Days & Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9.30am to 5.30pm. Additional evening babysitting opportunities, to be mutually agreed.

About the Client/Child Maya (12) is a very bright, affectionate and capable young lady. She has a big love for storytelling and creativity, enjoying films, books, anime, and games such as The Sims, Roblox, and Minecraft. She often replays or creates her own social stories from what she’s seen online, including YouTube shorts. She also has a passion for animals, from caring for her pet tortoise and training the family Labrador, to regular visits to a local farm where she helps care for donkeys, horses, sheep, and cows. Cooking is another favourite hobby—Maya prefers to experiment and improvise in the kitchen rather than follow recipes. Maya is neurodivergent, diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Condition, ADHD and sensory processing disorder. Maya presents with some PDA traits and benefits from people using declarative language. She can be very sensitive to wording and may take things personally or as criticism. Maya is very articulate in communicating her needs and will often let others know how she feels things could have been phrased differently.

The Role at a Glance You’ll be spending time with Maya, supporting her as a positive role model and someone she can rely on. You’ll help with KS3 English and Maths and support her with everyday life skills like selecting clothes, cooking, and planning fun activities at home. You’ll join in with her favourite games, go on coffee outings, occasional dog walk, explore things to do in the community, and be there for her social and emotional needs. Light meal prep and gentle prompts and guidance for self-care are part of the role. Maya is currently learning virtually for the rest of Year 8, so you’ll be supporting her at home. There’s a possibility she may return to a school setting for the next academic year and if that happens, there would be the opportunity for you to continue supporting her as her 1:1 in school.

This Job Would Suit This role would suit someone calm and patient; someone who isn’t too lively or chatty, as Maya has asked for someone who’s an active listener. Experience with autism, ADHD, and trauma-informed practice would be beneficial, particularly because Maya has experienced bullying at school. The ideal candidate will be good at reading situations, knowing when Maya needs space, and able to offer consistent support with both her learning and social-emotional wellbeing.
