Recruiter Notes: I had a great interview with this candidate today, she came across as warm, kind, friendly and passionate about supporting children and young people with special educational needs. She has been professionally supporting children with a wide range of disabilities and additional needs, such as, Autistic Spectrum Condition, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, those who are non-verbal, Epilepsy, those with behavioural needs, and children with global development delay, within school settings, as a 1-1 SEN learning support assistant. She is proficient in Makaton and PECS, and she is trained to use hoists and provide manual handling and personal care. This candidate originally started her career training as an adult nurse, and completed 2 years of her degree, along with relevant placements. She then decided, that supporting children and young people 1-1, within education was where her true passion was, and has since been honing her skill set, and broadening her experiences, by working in mainstream and SEN schools throughout London. She prides herself on her emotional intelligence, and her skills in relationship building, as she knows that these skills are key to forming trusting bonds with the children she supports, so that they can grow and develop in the safe and nurturing environment that she provides. She is a strong advocate for the young people that she supports, and she is guided by her strong moral compass. This candidate spoke very confidently about understanding children’s triggers, setting out clear boundaries and calmy deescalating situations.

She has extensive experience supporting children, and young people from age 3 to 18 years old who have learning/physical disabilities and complex medical needs including but not limited to Autism, hearing and visual impairment, BSL, Brail, Makaton, Eye Gaze, PECs, PEG, Epilepsy, seizure management, Oxygen Therapy, Cerebral Palsy, Tracheostomy care, and Suctioning (oral and tracheostomy). She has mainly worked in an SEN primary schools, but has worked for an agency where she supported SEN students 1:1 in college, and in family homes.

Due to a reduction in hours as the youngest will be starting school, she will be looking for her next role come September. This candidate has hands-on experience supporting children who are autistic and also has great experience assisting children with communication difficulties. She comes across as having a very playful nature and is passionate about ensuring that each child is given the best tools to develop and succeed. This candidate is very accustomed to following a child’s lead, presenting them with choices and not putting too many demands on them. She also has lots of nursery experience so is very happy to hit the ground running and assist with all siblings if required.
