About this client/child:
Ben aged 4 is a very social character and loves having people around him. He enjoys music, being out in nature and being taken on long walks. His older sister Emily, 10, is very independent, but completely dotes on her brother. Ben has a neurological condition and profound learning disabilities. He went without any seizures between 2016 and 2019, but did have one in November 2019, so you must always be alert and aware of the signs. Ben is very vocal at home and keen to communicate through eye pointing, sounds and facial expressions. He is working towards adaptive switches and Makaton. Ben is fed via a baby bottle which contains specialised milk and pureed food mixed. He has a PEG fitted for his medication.

Overview of role:
The family are looking for a SEN Nanny/Manny who can provide full-time support for both Ben and Emily. In the mornings you will be focused on getting Ben ready for school, preparing breakfast and helping with all his personal care needs. School starts at 9.20am and Ben will need to be driven to school. While Ben is at school there’s time to carry out necessary tasks. This includes picking up prescriptions, following up hospital appointments, cleaning medical equipment, keeping track of medical supplies, preparing meals, light housework and organising the children’s laundry. Once the SEN Nanny/Manny has collected Ben from school, the focus is again on Ben; Emily is very self-sufficient and will happily get on with her homework/various projects. Ben will have some ‘down time’ and then spend time in his standing frame. This is a good opportunity to engage in activities that encourage communication. It is then teatime and ensuring you have everything organised for the next day.

Who this job would suit:
We are looking for a confident, organised SEN Nanny/Manny who is on the ball, pro-active and able look ahead and plan for Ben’s schedule. Due to the severity of Ben’s condition you must always be alert and meticulous at keeping records of any behaviours that are not the norm and responding according to his care plan. You should be a confident driver who has their own car, mileage will be paid when on duty.

What’s great about this job:
This is a great opportunity to work with a young boy who is making great progress every day. You will play a key role in his further development whilst offering great support to his parents. The family are also happy to arrange Makaton training if this is of interest.
