Helen is an engaging 19 year old who is at the heart of a warm and large family that includes siblings, nieces and nephews (& a very friendly little dog!).  Helen had a road traffic accident two years ago and sustained a traumatic brain injury. She lives in an appropriately adapted home where she receives 2:1 support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The care team is lead by a Team Leader, overseen by a Case Manager.

Prior to her accident, Helen was a lively, bubbly and strong-willed young woman who loved shopping, music and horses. She still enjoys these things, but now requires full support to do so. She has retained her strong-will and determination, but can become frustrated and anxious. Helen’s speech is impaired and she requires people to carefully tune into her non-verbal communication. Helen needs people around her who will be patient and calm when needed; always verbally preparing her for what is happening next. Helen is very sensitive to touch and this can be problematic when she is receiving personal care. Helen can stand with support or in a standing frame and has regained sitting balance, but she requires hoisting for all transfers and mobilises in a wheelchair with assistance from her carers. She is fed via a gastrostomy. Helen has a rehabilitation programme in place that her team will implement to promote the very best outcome for her. You will have the opportunity to liaise and be trained by a team of professionals including OTs, physio and speech therapists.

In an ideal world you will have experience with people with an Acquired Brain Injury, and some experience of providing essential care, but the right attitude, commitment and desire to learn is just as important.
