About this client/child: Jean (54) is bright and friendly. She lives in a cosy bungalow in South London with her Mum. Jean likes to keep on top of the running of her household and is currently upgrading her lounge and garden. Jean’s Mum has Dementia and has her own carers that come in twice a day. Jean has a spinal cord injury and scoliosis and needs support with all aspects of her personal care, manual handling using hoists, transfers, and support with all her daily living tasks.

Overview of role: Jean requires a Personal Assistant (PA) to support her with all aspects of her daily life. Days start at 7.30am and Jean will need support with her morning routine, including bowel management, catheter care and showering. Jean is a dab hand at using the remote controls for her ceiling track hoist and will need support to transfer out of bed and into her chair. Jean experiences spasms because of her spinal injury and will need her PA to be patient and confident to transfer her into her chair, and ensure she is in a comfortable position. Training will be provided by current members of staff. Jean’s Mum loves to have a chat, and it would be great if the PA could engage her in conversation. Cooking healthy meals is a big part of this role, for both Jean and her Mum, and variety of meals will be key to ensuring that Jean’s Mum eats well. Jean would love someone who can help support her with the running of her household, including shopping and meal planning, running errands, support with admin tasks and light household duties. Sometimes the PA will drop Jean’s Mum to an activity or hospital appointment or pop out to run an errand or pick up some shopping. Jean’s Mum has her own carers who come in twice a day, though the PA will need to help Jean’s Mum get into bed at night and ensure she has taken her medication.

Who this job would suit: This role will suit a confident and experienced support worker/family support worker or PA, with good experience supporting someone with a spinal injury and someone with Dementia. It could suit someone with a nursing background who is looking for a full-time role within a home environment.

What’s great about this job: This is a fantastic full-time opportunity to support two fantastic ladies to live as independently as possible in their family home.
