About this client/child: James (17) is a sporty, friendly, happy, and very engaging young man. He enjoys skiing, going to the gym, and has recently been doing some fashion modelling. He takes pride in his appearance and is very much into his clothes! James is on the autistic spectrum (ASC) and whilst he can speak, he chooses to be relatively non-verbal. He has some self-stimulation behaviours but doesn’t present with any behaviours that challenge. James is very capable and aware of his surroundings but does require someone who can assist him in pushing his independence and developing his life skills further. The more relaxed James feels the chattier he becomes, so he does have the ability but this needs to be drawn out of him.

Overview of role: We are looking for a Support Worker / Buddy who can focus on James’ language and help promote his life skills throughout the day. You will accompany James to and from school. Weather permitting, it is encouraged for one of the journeys to be walked but public transport is an option too. During the day you will assist James in the classroom, adapt things when necessary, and offer him sensory breaks when needed. After school, is a great opportunity to focus on Jame’s life skills - going to the shops and giving him the tools and confidence to pay for things or heading home and helping him prepare an evening meal. The key focus throughout the day will be to continue optimising James’ ability and trying to unlock his full potential. The family is offering between £40,000 to £50,000 Gross Per Annum. The higher salary will reflect someone who has a SALT qualification as well as solid ASC experience.

Who this job would suit: This position will suit a physically fit, confident, and energetic Support Worker / Buddy who has a fun approach and can keep things entertaining. You should have at least 4 years’ experience working with young people with ASC and feel confident implementing SALT therapies into James’ routine. A qualification in SALT would be a big advantage. James loves sports and fashion so an interest in these areas would be useful.

What’s great about this job: This is a fantastic opportunity to help unlock James’ full potential. There will be the opportunity to spend time with James' speech therapist to share ideas on how to encourage and bring James’ language forward. The family holiday in Portugal during the Summer and Austria during the Christmas break. While there will be the opportunity to go with them, often this can be taken as additional holiday.
