Portland Hospital, London

The Portland Hospital is the UK’s largest private children’s hospital, treating more than 43,000 children a year.

Our 155 consultant paediatricians, many of whom hold senior posts at London’s teaching hospitals and are considered some of the world’s leading paediatric specialists, treat children of all ages from newborns up to the age of 18.

We have 58 paediatric beds including a dedicated 10-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), Transitional Care Unit (TCU), Neuro-rehabilitation Unit, medical and surgical wards, and a dedicated day-case unit.

The Children’s Unit is open at all times for elective and urgent admissions, and its onsite state-of-the-art facilities and expertise mean all children can be diagnosed and treated there, from complex cases and the acutely unwell, to those needing routine outpatient appointments.

Yet, visit our Children’s Unit, and you will find a warm, clean, welcoming and homely environment, designed to help make your child feel at ease, reduce their anxiety and aid their recovery.

Attracting outstanding physicians and surgeons in every speciality enables us to offer the full breadth of children’s services, ensuring a fully-integrated healthcare approach: from day case ENT surgery to multi-specialist craniofacial and neurosurgery. A full list of our specialties can be found here.

Our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit offers back-up support for all our paediatric specialties, as well as treatment for critically ill children transferred from other UK or international hospitals.

Why choose The Portland Hospital for your child?

The Portland is 'home' to 120 top paediatric consultant specialists (plus 35 general consultant paediatricians) - the largest group of private paediatric specialists in the UK, many of whom are considered to be some of the world's leading clinicians. Lots of our specialists also hold senior clinical and research posts at leading NHS trust hospitals such as Great Ormond Street, Guys & St Thomas' and St Mary’s Hospital.

Our Children's Unit is open at all times for elective and urgent admissions. We also run a fast-track referral service which means that your child can have a same-day or next day appointment with a general paediatrician if necessary.

We have a team of over 300 healthcare professionals to help with your child’s diagnosis, treatment and recovery including specialist children's nurses, play specialists, audiologists, physiotherapists, psychologists, dietitians, occupational therapists and radiographers.

Our dedicated 10-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and emergency on-call medical teams mean you can be assured that the best available emergency care is on hand should your child need it.

Having the best diagnostic and imaging technology enables our paediatric specialists to diagnose medical conditions quickly and accurately. This means treatment can begin earlier and patients can get better sooner which helps to reduce the inevitable stress on the family. Our Diagnostic and Imaging Department offers a wide range of examinations, in a child-friendly environment, with the option of anaesthetised MRI and CT Scans should your child find it difficult to stay completely still for the duration of the scan.

We don’t treat any adult patients on our Children’s Unit, so your child’s hospital experience will be completely tailored to their needs. Our wish is that every child and their family will feel respected, supported, involved and, of course, properly cared for. We understand that when your child enters hospital, it is important that they receive compassionate care and kindness - and that’s at the heart of what we do here at The Portland.

Staying with us is a very comfortable experience, and all children are given their own private room with a TV and en-suite facilities. There is free wireless internet access throughout the hospital and a playroom full of interactive computers, books and toys. A special children’s menu is available to tempt your child to eat. We also actively encourage a parent to stay overnight in their child’s room too, as we know that when your child is in hospital you want to be there every step of the way.
