Christmas can be an exciting and fun time for many of us, but new activity can be overwhelming - particularly for some autistic people. However, with good planning and communication, Christmas can be enjoyed by all. With the help of autistic people and their friends and families, the National Autistic Society have put together a list of tips for the festive period.
At the beginning of the month, Jade and Sally from Snap had a really interesting time at the BABICM conference. The speakers were all excellent and so informative and engaging. Very interesting points were discussed around how creativity and 'thinking outside the box' could enhance and enrich the client's situation. Examples ranged from trying alternative therapies such as reflexology, joining a client in mucking out horses to demonstrate she wasn't being asked to do something the case manager wouldn't do, or taking a client outside for a walk when a tricky situation needed to be discussed (reducing the intensity). Creative ideas have to be weighed up against the potential risks, but it was very thought-provoking to think about how different approaches can create much more personalised support. There was so much fascinating information provided that day it would be impossible to write about it all - but a theme than ran through the day (which we were very pleased to hear acknowledged), was about the important job support workers do, the 'hidden glue' in a care team, and how beneficial it was for a case manager to also have previous experience as a support worker. A truly informative day, we had the opportunity to meet new professionals in the industry and wonderful to catch up with case managers we know very well - including the first case manager Snap ever worked with back in 2002 (Hello Carol!). There’s a lot to love about The Bee Cafe, a breezy space located within Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination in Abu Dhabi – from the mod-con interiors to its coffee. But it is undoubtedly the candour of its staff that makes this cafe truly special. The Bee Cafe, which had its soft launch earlier this month, is the first cafe in the UAE to be run entirely by people of determination. The establishment currently employs six members of staff who have gone through barista, customer service, and hospitality training since the start of the year, enabling them to do everything from taking orders and making and serving a range of speciality coffees, to socialising with guests.
