Alison is eleven years old. She has a huge sense of fun, she loves to clap and sing and laugh and it is rare that she isn’t wearing a huge smile! With her little dog by her side Alison is a pleasure to be around. When I met with the family she was all smiles and laughter, you can really tell that Alison is a very sociable little girl.

Alison has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and a profound learning difficulty. She is nonverbal. Alison is, however, very physically able. She requires some support when walking independently, especially with her balance and her coordination, but Alison has an independent streak and this job is about safely supporting Alison but also nurturing and developing her self-reliance and independence.

Alison is a very sociable little girl and loves to be around people. Alison is at her happiest when out and about in the community or accessing her after school activities, which involve yoga, therapy programmes and fun trips out and about. A favourite haunt is Chessington world of adventures, and as a treat Alison loves the rides there.

Alison has a learning difficulty, and she does require a little extra support when adapting to change, on some occasions she can become frustrated, especially if she is struggling to make herself understood to those around her. A calm demeanour and a warm smile goes a long way to helping Allison to manage her behaviour. It would be desirable (but not essential) for you to have some experience of non-verbal communication, implementing therapy regimes (working under the guidance of a team of professional therapists), severe learning difficulties and epilepsy.

You will need bags of energy for this role, and if you can keep up with Allison this is a great opportunity for you to help this special young lady to access her therapies and develop and meet her targets. If you have an interest in promoting appropriate behaviour, supporting a young person through therapies and learning from some of the top therapists in the country this role is for you.

The days of work during term time are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 2.45pm to 7.45pm. Alison has just been given a place at an after school club on Wednesdays; if you wanted more hours you could accompany her. This really will be a wonderful chance to utilise your skills in enabling Allison to reach her full potential.

For more information please contact Janet at SNAP who met with this very kind and welcoming family; who are well known to us here at SNAP!
