About this client/child: Owen, aged 12, loves the outdoors, swimming, walking, travelling and being around people. He likes animals, visiting garden centres and pet shops - anything that makes him laugh. He doesn't like loud noises, especially shouting and loud motorbikes on streets. Owen has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is fully dependent for all his care needs. He is non-verbal but communicates using facial expressions as well as his low tech and eye gaze communication. Owen is PEG fed but can eat some solids orally, mainly snacks. He also has epilepsy and receives medication for it. His family home has been fully adapted including a ceiling track hoist, lift and specialist bathroom.
Overview of role: Owen attends a local specialist school. As his Teaching Assitant (TA), you will support him in all aspects of his learning and participation in school life. A key part of the role is the development and facilitation of his communication skills, maintaining his physical health and optimising his abilities. Owen has a therapy team that includes a physiotherapist and a Speech and Language Therapist. You will work closely with them as well as Owen’s family to ensure continuity of care. Twice a week (family is flexible on days) you will support Owen after school in his family home where you will focus on his rehabilitation plan, activities of daily living and household duties related to Owen such as preparation of meals. The family travels to Spain regularly during the holidays for specific therapy for Owen so if you are interested in accompanying them this would be an option.
Who this job would suit: We are looking for a motivated person who is positive, imaginative and can provide support with a fun approach. Experience of working with children with physical disabilities and in a school environment is desirable. However, if the candidate has a desire to work with a child with complex care needs and has a positive attitude towards learning and developing within the role, support and full training will be provided.
What’s great about this job: This is a rewarding opportunity for a SEN Teaching Assistant (TA) to be a part of Owen’s rehabilitation journey and support him to achieve as much independence as possible. You will be working closely within a team, helping to ensure that continuity of care is provided.
