About this client/child: Ben (16) lives at home with his Mum, Dad, and younger sister. Ben has an adapted living area equipped to meet his needs. He attends school full time and likes activities such as swimming, theme parks, Zoo’s, library, and going to open spaces where he can run around, after school and at weekends. At home he likes to have iPad time and play with his many toys. Ben has Epilepsy due to Dravet Syndrome, is on the Autistic Spectrum, has learning disabilities and limited spontaneous communication. He has food orally and a PEG in place for liquids and medication. Ben can walk short distances and uses a wheelchair for longer walks.
Overview of role: Ben requires a support worker to assist him with all his daily needs; personal care, feeding, dressing, and playing. In the morning, it’s getting Ben ready for school and to walk him there in his wheelchair which is 20 minutes from his home, (Uber if poor weather). School finishes at 3.00pm, and then Ben and his support worker will do an activity such as swimming or the Zoo before going home for dinner. (Ben will need his support worker to be proactive to find new and exciting places to go). At mealtimes Ben's food needs to be chopped up and he needs support and encouragement to eat well. Throughout the day and night Ben has epileptic seizures that present in various ways and needs constant monitoring. Night shifts involve monitoring Ben for seizures and encouraging him to have a good night’s sleep and relax. A few light household tasks are also kept for night shifts. There is use of a kitchen and living room with a monitor/camera, tea and coffee making facilities. Candidates need to have flexibility to cover other staff’s sickness and annual leave, agreed in advance where possible and paid extra.
Who this job would suit: This position will suit someone living locally, who is a confident and experienced support worker. Someone who is proactive at finding new activities for Ben to do, and who likes to be active and busy. Someone who is a confident swimmer is a must as this is one of Ben's favourite activities.
What’s great about this job: This job provides a great mixture of full-time hours and on-the-job training will be provided by the (Snap Care) Team Manager and Senior Support Worker. Accessible location with great transport links.
