About this client/child: Charlie (25) has a great sense of humour! He lives at home with his parents and grown-up siblings. Charlie loves being in the company of others and hearing people chat about DVD’s, stories, history, funny things, and generally being silly! He has a long list of interests which include cinema, theatre, shopping, museums, stations and is always open to new ideas. Charlie has Cerebral Palsy and requires 24/7 care for all his care needs. He is full time wheelchair user, requires 2:1 support for his manual handling (ceiling track hoists and mobile used) and is fed via a gastrostomy. Charlie is non-verbal but will use his own signs for important things (to him). He will also make it very clear if he is happy or not, vocalising through laughter if happy, and shouting if sad. If Charlie is becoming very stressed, you will notice his breathing becomes very fast and at that point, you’ll need to help calm, reassure and distract Charlie.
Overview of role: We are looking for a Full time SEN Support Worker / Team Leader to work closely with Charlie and assist with all his care needs. He visits a day centre Monday to Thursday which you will accompany him to and assist him with the activities – he will need lots of encouragement to try things outside of his comfort zone! On Friday’s Charlie is at home and whilst at times he will want some down time with his iPad, you’ll find appropriate activities to do in the community and encourage Charlie to take part. The family are very keen to look at starting some hydrotherapy sessions. Additionally, the new PA / Team leader will take responsibility for managing the Rota, collating and checking worked hours and dealing with day-to-day issues within the care team. Prior to this Charlie’s mum has taken on full responsibility so there will be an adjustment whilst this is handed over. You will be given adequate time to ensure you are able to complete these tasks. There will also be the opportunity for overtime to cover sleepover shifts, £75.00 Gross per night.
Who this job would suit: A great deal of energy and sense of humour are key for this position – the sillier you can be the better! Charlie really feeds off this energy and once you hear his ‘wicked’ laugh you will be ready to pull out all the stops. Charlie can become frustrated and fixated on certain activities so needs someone with an infinite amount of patience, great imagination, huge amounts of energy, drive and be physically fit.
What’s great about this job: We placed Charlie’s last PA 17 years ago and she is still with him now! A very rewarding role; the more you put in, the more you will get out. You will be joining a supportive family and team of 6 Support Workers. All-round on-the-job training offered. Opportunity to get involved in Charlie’s OT sessions. The family holiday to Florida every year for two weeks (usually around mid/late September) and would love for the PA / Team Leader to accompany them for at least half of the duration, all costs covered.
