About this client/child: Callum aged 14 is an active, happy and very social young man. He enjoys adapted sport, swimming, the theatre, socialising and just being out and about. He has cerebral palsy and requires support for all activities of daily living, including personal care and assisting with social and leisure opportunities. Callum independently drives his wheelchair and loves an active lifestyle. He uses an electronic talker for his communication as well as some of his own gestures/signs. Callum will require support with his feeding, but he can manage mashed food well and has a PEG fitted for water and medication only.

Overview of role: We are looking for an SEN Support Worker / Buddy who can facilitate Callum’s active schedule and assist him with the activities he loves to do. Callum loves making new friends with people he meets when out in the community and will initiate conversation – your guidance will be required in relation to this. Some activities away from the family home will require 2:1 support. You will need to be proactive in relation to identifying new activities and experiences for him to do. His family home has been adapted for his needs, including a through floor lift. There is also a separate carers’ room provided with sink, kitchenette and chairs available which can be used during breaks. Whilst prior experience supporting a young person with a physical disability will be useful, full training will be provided, so having the right approach and personality is key! There will be the potential, by mutual agreement, for further school holidays and more weekends if of interest and sick leave cover for other team members. The hourly rate being offered is between £15.50 and £16.50 Gross Per Hour depending on experience.

Who this job would suit: Perhaps you are a SEN Teacher or Teaching Assistant looking for additional income, or an experienced support worker seeking a new challenge! We are looking for someone who is outgoing with a real sense of adventure who is happy to participate in a variety of outdoor activities. Being proactive, upbeat, having an encouraging approach and a good sense of humour will be key. The appointment of a second support worker on a bank contract would be considered.

What’s great about this job: The biggest selling point for this role really is Callum – there will never be a dull moment and lots of opportunity to have fun together. The family are very friendly and welcoming and one of the Support Workers has been with the family for 9 years! Full comprehensive training related to Callum will also be provided.
