This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and enthusiastic individual to work with a 19 year old autistic young man in an experienced ABA team who are guiding Thomas in to greater independence. This job will suit someone doing postgraduate study in associated field of work who sees experience of working with an autistic person assisting with their career development.
The job involves working with individual members of the team on his formal learning; accompanying Thomas on work experience and his afternoon /early evening clubs. The ABA programme is fairly eclectic and includes art and practicing lots of life skills, like money and shopping.
People who have previously done this role have acquired therapeutic skills and experience that has assisted in them furthering their careers in professions including speech and language, counselling young people and teaching in an SEN school.
Thomas is autistic with moderate learning difficulties. He is verbal, can read and do simple sums. He has a sense of humour. He can ride a bike, sail a boat, and swim. He enjoys yoga, cooking and watching his huge collection of videos. He dislikes loud noises and can get anxious if routines are changed. The team are skilled at shaping his behaviour.
He has had a home education programme since he was 5 years old. There are three ABA tutors, all of whom spend about 12 hours a week with him. The team has a weekly meeting with its ABA supervisor. The person doing this job will work alongside the afternoon tutor, receiving ABA instruction on the job. Formal ABA teaching can be provided.
Activities after 4.30pm, when the person doing this job will have sole charge, include swimming, a Tuesday club where Thomas and his peers take turn to choose an activity, time in the gym with his gym buddy and a boat club where he kayaks. The person doing this job will work with William’s peers, alongside other carers, in these afternoon activities.
The family also have a house in East Sussex where they usually spend a week at Easter and up to 6 weeks in the summer. The PA / Buddy will accompany the family 1 week at Easter and for 3 weeks in the summer holidays; your own separate accommodation will be provided.
