Katherine, 7, is a lively young girl who loves swimming, going to Brownies and playing with her twin sister, Megan! Katherine has cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus which manifests as a weakness on her right side affecting her balance, chewing abilities and fine motor skills in her right hand. Both girls attend a mainstream school and we are looking for an after school support worker to work with them, although the main focus will be on Katherine.

The role will involve picking the girls up from school, following Katherine’s therapy routine, helping with homework, preparing and supervising meal time and light household tasks. Katherine’s therapy comprises physio and hand exercises for her right hand and she also works with an SLT on her speech, which can sometimes become indistinct. Katherine is highly inquisitive and can become distracted, so you will need to keep a close eye on her while she is doing her homework and at dinner time and encourage her to keep her mind on the task at hand.

This job will suit a fun and bubbly support worker who enjoys being around children. Ideally you will have experience working with children with a disability, but a willingness to learn is just as important as the family would like to find a support worker who really gels with them and can form a long-term bond with Katherine and Megan. Term time hours as above; during school holidays you will work the same hours but the pattern will be mutually agreed between you and the parents. A driver with own car and a non-smoker is essential for this position.
