About this client/child:
Lee is soon to be a teenager and has Cerebral Palsy is very bright and active and requires stimulation and creative play during his waking hours. He is extremely communicative; his vocabulary is expanding on a daily basis and he is very responsive with his body language and facial expressions. He loves going to school and really enjoys all areas of sensory and creative play, swimming, horse riding and adapted trampolining. His brothers, (9 and 8), are also very active and they all really enjoy listening and dancing to music together as well as adaptive skiing. The daughter who is 1 year old, loves spending time with her brothers and is starting to develop her social skills and confidence at local baby groups.
Overview of role:
The family is looking for a family support worker to expand an existing team who is able to support their eldest boy and also help out with his younger siblings where necessary. Most importantly, it will be that you are supportive of the whole family and enhancing their quality of life. With so much going on, it really is an all hands to the deck approach. Being organised, thinking ahead (but also spontaneously) and planning are all essential skills. Your role as a family support worker is one of an enabler to assist and support the children in every aspect of daily living but also to have fun and play. The position also provides much-needed support to Mum and Dad, who are managing the day to day stresses of looking after a son with special needs whilst trying to provide all their children with the attention they deserve.
