Nathan is a handsome and placid 7 year old with the biggest smile! He enjoys music – especially Ed Sheeran and songs from ‘The Greatest Showman’, transport and watching Formula 1. He responds especially to auditory stimulation and loves books or toys that are interactive. Nathan is autistic and has associated learning difficulties. He communicates mainly through Makaton and PECS although he does use some basic words such as ‘more’. Nathan’s understanding is increasing and he will usually follow instructions well when focused on the task in hand. Nathan is currently being toilet trained which is an ongoing process.
The SEN Nanny / Manny will be supporting Nathan sole charge after school. Nathan is dropped off by the school bus around 3.45pm. He will usually have some ‘chill’ time with his music, plastic instruments and Mr. Tumble before dinner. It is then bath time, with Nathan usually being in bed for 7.00 pm. On certain days there may be a trip to the park or perhaps a walk through the town; you’ll need be constantly alert as Nathan has little awareness of danger.
Part of the role will include some light nursery duties, such as tidying up after Nathan and checking his school bag and replenishing if necessary. Nathan’s parents usually arrive home from work at around 7.00 pm, this will usually mean an earlier finish for the SEN Nanny / Manny but 20 hours work a week will be guaranteed during term time. During the school holidays there is much more opportunity to arrange fun things to do, such as a trip to the beach or miniature railway which are both fairly local to the family. Any hours not worked during the school holidays will be a banked on a monthly basis for additional babysitting or occasional hours on a Friday.
This job will suit someone who is reliable, patient and who can really take the time to get to know Nathan, his ways and the things he enjoys. The family is very welcoming and more than happy for the SEN Nanny / Manny to introduce new ideas and strategies that you think would work well. You should feel comfortable to use your own initiative and not wait for direction.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to support Nathan’s on-going development and continue to promote his independence. The current Nanny has been with the family for 5 years and will be available to assist with shadow shifts before she leaves. This is such a warm and welcoming family and a very happy place to work.
